Cem Kar, the writer and director of the “Unknown Prisoners” documentary film and book, gave a lecture in the conference hall of the Eastern Mediterranean University Library.
In his lecture, Cem Kar spoke about what it means to be missing. Kar said, “When we reach our missing loved ones, their remains can give us an idea of how they were killed. But we cannot know what they experienced before they died or what their psychological state was. In this film and book, you will learn what people who went missing for a time went through and what it means to be unable to communicate. You will make sense of the question, ‘What does it mean not to be known?’” The students’ keen interest in the lecture did not go unnoticed.
Following the lecture, students watched the documentary film, which tells the story of an unknown event that took place immediately after Turkey’s first operation in Cyprus on 20 July 1974.
After the screening, which was also attended by Prof. Dr. Cem Tanova, Dean of the EMU Faculty of Business and Economics, and Mine Çeliker, graphic designer of the Unknown Prisoners documentary film and book, Cem Kar answered students’ questions.
The Student Council presented Cem Kar with a plaque for taking part in the lecture organized by the EMU Student Council.
