The premiere of the documentary ‘Meçhul Tutsaklar’, produced by journalist Cem Kar, was held the previous evening at the Atatürk Culture and Congress Center of Near East University (YDÜ). Meral Eroğlu, the wife of President Derviş Eroğlu, also attended the first screening of the documentary, which tells the story of the 84 days of captivity of 74 mujahideen from the Lefke region, beginning on July 22, 1974, through their registration as prisoners of war and ultimately their release.
THE STRUGGLE TO MAKE 74 MISSING MUJAHIDEEN KNOWN: In his remarks about the documentary, its producer and director Cem Kar said he did not want to say much about the documentary recounting an event that took place 37 years ago, because the people at the heart of the story speak in it. Kar said that the documentary “Meçhul Tutsaklar” was a major project, and that it tells the story of how the release process began when, purely by chance, Turkish war correspondent journalists were held in the same place as the 74 mujahideen captured in the Lefke region, whose names were not recorded anywhere, and concluded with the list of names being delivered to the North through those journalists. Cem Kar said they had reached everyone involved in the events who was still alive, thanked them all, and wished mercy upon those who had died.
VIEWERS EXPERIENCED EMOTIONAL MOMENTS: During the evening, viewers of the documentary were moved at times by the mujahideen’s accounts. The mujahideen who were present in the hall and had been at the heart of the events also returned to 37 years earlier as they listened to themselves and their friends recount what had happened. Remembering those difficult days once again, the mujahideen could not hold back their tears.
