Journalist Cem Kar;
Journalist Cem Kar said that it was wrong to demolish the embankment in the area while commenting on the flooding in the Nicosia Industrial Zone. Kar said he viewed positively the proposal by Hakan Dinçyürek, Minister of Environment and Natural Resources, that citizens make sacrifices so a filter could be installed on the chimney of the Teknecik Power Plant. Journalist Cem Kar was a guest on the Günaydın Ada program hosted by Gözde Bekir. Sharing his comments on the day’s main developments, Kar discussed the flooding in Nicosia and the disputes that began with Doğuş Derya’s speech from the parliamentary rostrum.
“WE CREATED HEROES”
Commenting on the flooding in the Nicosia Industrial Zone at the beginning of the week, despite the sunny weather, Cem Kar said temporary solutions were no remedy. Saying that demolishing the embankment that had been built was the wrong thing to do, Kar said: “The sun is shining brightly, but there’s water all around. It was a strange situation, but the reasons for it were clear too. And then we created heroes again.”
“AS LONG AS IT’S INSTALLED”
Another topic on the agenda was the proposal by Hakan Dinçyürek, Minister of Environment and Natural Resources, to install a filter on the chimney of the Teknecik Power Plant. Commenting on the proposal, Kar said it could be put into practice. Reminding listeners that citizens had made certain sacrifices for Teknecik in previous years as well, Kar also said the necessary funding for the filter could be found: Journalist Cem Kar said, “When a minister says, ‘We’ll install a filter at Teknecik, but we don’t have the necessary budget. Electricity bills will continue like this for a little longer. That’s how things have been until now anyway. This concerns your health,’ I don’t think our people would say no at this point. I’d say, let it be installed, and let more follow. I’ll pay that money for another month. I have paid it. So there’s no problem with that. As long as it’s installed.”
“IT’S ALREADY BEING DISCUSSED BEHIND CLOSED DOORS” Kar also commented on the disputes that began with CTP MP Doğuş Derya’s speech from the parliamentary rostrum, stressing that it was right to listen to the entirety of both Derya’s and Töre’s speeches before commenting. Saying that everyone was commenting on the dispute from the angle that suited them, Kar reacted to this with the following words: “We could interpret Doğuş Derya’s words like this: ‘She said this about the Turkish soldier—how ungrateful,’ and so on; we could say all sorts of things. But that doesn’t change the incident, or those words, or that person’s views. It matters all the more if that person is an MP, because people elected them and sent them there. Ms. Derya says there that Greek Cypriot women were raped just like Turkish women. Doğuş joined by phone during your program with Mr. Zorlu. She said some very true things there. As a society, we have to accept that we have this problem. It’s already being discussed behind closed doors. In this regard, we haven’t convinced some people. Either what those people are saying is actually right, or we’re in the wrong, or we’re right. We can’t know without discussing it.”
