The documentary film “Unknown Prisoners,” directed by Cem Kar, will be screened in Izmir today and in Ankara on Thursday. According to a statement by Cem Kar, the book “Unknown Prisoners” will be promoted and a book-signing event held immediately after the screenings. The documentary film “Unknown Prisoners” will meet audiences in Izmir tomorrow at 19:00 at the Konak Municipality Prof. Dr. Türkan Saylan Alsancak Culture and Arts Center. The Turkish screenings of “Unknown Prisoners” will continue in Ankara, where the gala will take place on Thursday at 19:00 at the Çankaya Municipality Contemporary Arts Center.
In a statement, Cem Kar said, “It is very pleasing and a source of pride, both for our country and for me personally, that our documentary has attracted interest and received invitations from Izmir and the capital, Ankara, two of Turkey’s major centers…” Kar continued: “At this point, I would like to thank the mayors who have shown interest in the film and book, our ambassador in Ankara and his staff, and our consul in Izmir and their staff. The journey of the documentary, in which those who lived through these events recount what happened, will continue in the coming days. We will continue to accept invitations from various cities across Turkey, especially Istanbul, to tell the story of our struggle to make Unknown Prisoners known through our book and to screen the documentary.” The statement noted that the documentary film and book “Unknown Prisoners” had drawn attention for bringing to light an unknown incident that took place in 1974, and that in the film and book, Cem Kar used a distinctive technique to weave together statements by 57 people, having those who experienced the incident recount what they went through in their own words.
