Forgetting…

Cem Kar writing archive icon

Forgetting painful experiences!

Locking memories away in a corner of your brain, never to remember them again…

Perhaps it is a way out; a way to avoid experiencing the same pain again…

And yet sometimes you cannot escape, just like me!

It is not easy to forget it!

You are surrendering your life…

With every tremor, you question your future.

Every tremor takes something away from your future.

Every tremor shakes your dreams, too!

Your dreams disappear one by one!

This lack of dreams destroys your future!

The destruction of your future has set the stage for your own destruction…

In fact, this thing you do unwittingly is preparation for your own destruction!

You have no dreams, no hopes, no future anymore!

All that remains are the things you have lived through…

You begin to question your past.

Your mistakes, your achievements, the things you did not do…

You remember, one by one, the things you want to forget!

Your mistakes become torment; a fist strikes your heart…

Your regrets suddenly multiply!

You have no past anymore…

At that moment, this seems very strange to you; the past to which you devoted your whole life flashes before your eyes in a matter of seconds. You take stock of it, and then, just as suddenly, it disappears…

At that moment, you think you are ready for your own destruction!

For you, it becomes only a matter of time…

At that moment, there are only you and the one you believe in, and you pray to Him…

And you begin to wait for ‘that’ moment!

I am among those who waited for that moment and survived.

I have tried to describe above what I experienced over 45 seconds.

But the cries of “Save us” coming from the houses around us from the early hours of the morning are still ringing in my ears…

As someone who has lived through all this, I must say that I am very concerned about the TRNC…

Because the TRNC still has no ‘Earthquake Code’ or ‘Earthquake Map’!

Furthermore, there is no legal requirement for soil surveys for homes being built, nor any legal regulation requiring homes to be constructed to withstand a possible earthquake!

Do you think I am wrong to be concerned?

And I cannot help asking:

These things did not exist in Turkey either, and it was only after the August 17, 1999 earthquake that they began to be introduced and implemented, at least in part.

Do we, too, have to experience such pain in order to make the necessary regulations?

Until Friday, I hope…

Pay attention to your surroundings, keep them clean, and please be courteous in traffic!

Note: I pray that God grants mercy to those who lost their lives in the Marmara Region on August 17, 1999, and patience to their loved ones, who still carry the pain in their hearts.
