The Corruption of Failing to Perform One’s Duty

As you know, the Prime Ministry Inspection Board (BDK) became law the day before yesterday. It is already clear that once this board, which was established amid controversy, begins operating, the debates will grow even more heated.

Quite apart from all these debates, I must say that I am glad this board, which will have such extensive powers, is being established. There are so many things in this country that need inspecting and, as Mr. Eroğlu put it, so many incidents where “the perpetrators get away with it”—the list is endless!

That being so, the BDK will have so much to do that I would like to bring to its attention a few matters I fear may be forgotten amid all this confusion! I consider this my duty, and I believe that finding those responsible for the incidents I mention below should be the BDK’s primary task.

• Who is responsible for the environmental pollution caused by the Dikmen dump and the “confusion over authority”? Which officials failed to resolve this problem for years? Who has caused people—especially in Hamitköy—to fall ill from breathing the toxic air produced by this dump?

• Who gave permission for quarries to be opened without proper planning, so that the country’s mountains could be carved up? Who oversees these quarries? Are they inspected at all? On what grounds and under what conditions were the people licensed to operate quarries given permission, and who granted it? What will quarry operators do about the environmental damage they have caused? Was there corruption in this matter? If so, who was responsible?

• Who is failing to do anything to prevent traffic accidents, our country’s most serious problem? Could our roads be causing accidents? If so, who is responsible? Who oversees driving schools, if anyone? Who is responsible for failing to inspect the schools that provide driving lessons? Have the reasons for the large number of traffic accidents been investigated? Who failed to investigate and take precautions? If the issue is education, who is responsible for the lack of it?

• Are the people responsible for safeguarding the interests of our citizens—who cannot use the country’s beaches unless they pay—doing their jobs properly? Who occupies the offices that are supposed to penalize organizations that deprive our people of their legal right to use the beaches if they do not pay a fee? If these officials are not doing their jobs, who is keeping them in those positions? Are these people engaging in corruption? If they are, do they simply “get away with it”?

• While the country faces environmental problems, who is remaining indifferent and failing to prevent them, despite being responsible for doing so? Who is keeping these people, who are failing to do their jobs, in those positions? If the issue is education, who is responsible for the lack of it?

Power means responsibility.

It seems the BDK will have considerable power!

And of course, that power comes with serious responsibilities...

Because of these serious responsibilities, the Prime Ministry Inspection Board will be obliged to investigate these cases of corruption. Financial corruption comes to light one way or another; there must be records of it somewhere! For this reason, financial corruption will not take up much of the BDK’s time.

That being so, the BDK will undoubtedly devote most of its working hours to investigating those guilty of the “corruption of failing to perform one’s duty”!

I hope that, in the course of this process, the BDK does not itself fall into the trap of “the corruption of failing to perform one’s duty”!

We will see in time...

Once again, best wishes to our country on the establishment of the Prime Ministry Inspection Board!

Note: In the meantime, because of space constraints, I have mentioned only a few problems by way of example. I am eagerly waiting to find out who is responsible for causing them...

Until Tuesday, I hope...

Pay attention to your surroundings, keep them clean, and please be courteous in traffic!
