The boast we’ve been hearing from the Prime Minister for some time—“I increased UBP from 24 MPs to 30”—strikes me as very strange… It’s much like hiring only people related to delegates, or someone over the age of 50, and saying, “If giving our young people jobs is a crime, then yes, we are proud to have committed that crime.” Anyway…
Most recently, UBP Girne MP Necdet Numan made this remark the other evening at one of those famous dinners where UBP members gathered. When Numan said they would continue to walk together, believing in and trusting Prime Minister İrsen Küçük, who had taken over UBP with 24 MPs and increased that number to 30, the Prime Minister said his goal was a great UBP. Then the Prime Minister’s birthday was celebrated with a cake… Many happy returns…
Now that I think about it, is this increase in numbers something to be respected or celebrated, or should we act as if it never happened? In my view, if they had gone into an election with 24 MPs and won it with 30, they could have boasted about it all they liked… But there was no election… And the numbers went up… So how? Through defections… Who defected or joined UBP? Three MPs who ran for DP and won, two MPs who ran for ÖRP and won, and one MP who was expelled from UBP, founded a party, and then shut it down… If we leave the last one out, five MPs who won votes and seats without running as UBP candidates are now UBP members… This must be what a great UBP looks like…

Çakıcı said they could not have asked for a CTP MP to be the candidate, and that while CTP was discussing a 7+7 arrangement with them for municipal council candidates, it was also discussing 6+6+2 with BKP, without their knowledge. Saying that CTP did not want an agreement, Çakıcı criticized and denied Asım Akansoy’s remarks, saying, “Now they’re trying to put the ball in our court”…
When I asked whether they would field a candidate, Çakıcı replied, “We absolutely will… Our candidate is Suphi Hüdaoğlu. We’ll make the official announcement on Monday”…
It looks as though the names of three candidates have now been confirmed…
Let’s see who UBP will nominate after its party congress.
