Lefke Residents Embraced the ‘Unknown Prisoners’

Unknown Prisoners, the first documentary film by producer and director Cem Kar, was screened the previous day at the European University of Lefke as part of Lefke’s Liberation Ceremonies. The documentary, the result of research that Cem Kar has been conducting since 2009, tells how, after Lefke fell on July 22, 1974, members of the command echelon and the mujahideen were taken from their homes under the pretext of being questioned and sent on a journey into the unknown. Nearly 60 people living in different parts of the world were interviewed for a total of 1,500 minutes for the documentary, which recounts the struggle of the mujahideen—whose families never heard from them again after they were taken to Lefke Police Station under the pretext of being questioned—to become known.

THE LOCAL COMMUNITY SHOWED GREAT INTEREST: The evening began with opening remarks by producer and director Cem Kar and continued with a screening of the “Unknown Prisoners” documentary. The screening concluded after European University of Lefke Rector Prof. Dr. Ahmet Bülend Göksel presented flowers to director Kar and delivered the closing remarks. In addition to regional commanders and the mujahideen featured in the documentary, the screening attracted strong interest from the people of Lefke.
