HELLO

WORLD

(Publication

Date: April 30, 2007)

Hello, balcony.

Hello, Mom.

Hello, humanity.

***

These days, there’s an excitement in our home—you wouldn’t believe it!

For us, this excitement has become a waiting period divided into different stretches of time.

I must also admit that, at times, it has been mixed with impatience.

We have “guests from God” in our home!

We now make an effort not to enter one part of our home.

We have guests in that part whom we mustn’t disturb!

Here’s how it all began:

As you know, a tremendous change took place in my life a few months ago. I used to be an ordinary person, just trying to get by like anyone else; but I’m not an ordinary person anymore!

Because I’m a father now… You know how they say that until a baby is 40 days old, you shouldn’t do this or that, you have to be careful with the baby, their sleep schedule is irregular, and so on. So during those days, my dear wife and I had started living in the little one’s room.

At night, I slept on the floor in that room, while my wife slept in the bed we planned for the little one to use in the future. Sometimes we switched places, too. Since we’re a bit of a “better-safe-than-sorry” family, we’d already bought things the little one might use in the future (a playpen, a high chair, strollers, and so on). Well, of course, those things had to go somewhere, so we put them on top of the wardrobe in the little one’s room. And that’s when it all happened. One night during those 40 days, at a rare moment when the little one was asleep, we decided to get some sleep ourselves, and this time we switched things up: my wife slept on the floor, and I fell into a short sleep in the bed. I woke up for some reason, and right after that, one of the heavy items on top of the wardrobe fell onto the pillow where I’d laid my head! In my sleepiness, I let out a scream—you must surely have heard it (don’t laugh, it was pretty loud). Then my wife woke up too (naturally), and when we saw how heavy the item was, we realized it could have killed me. We couldn’t help saying, “We must have had some lucky escape.” That very morning, I moved the things on top of the wardrobe out onto the balcony. Thank goodness we realized the danger early and, before anyone got hurt, removed the danger they posed and turned them back into products that would bring great convenience when used. Now they’re on our balcony, harmlessly waiting for the day they will be used. On the other hand, I can’t help getting mad at myself, thinking, “What on earth possessed me to put those things on top of the wardrobe?”

Yes,

that’s the story…

I told you we have guests from God in our home whom we mustn’t disturb; well, those guests from God are living on our balcony.

They are a new pigeon family. (As you can see in the photo.)

They came into the world among the things I’d moved out onto the balcony.

It’s only been four days since they hatched.

We no longer go out onto the balcony, so as not to disturb their mother as she tries to keep them warm by sitting on them.

Because whenever we go out onto the balcony, their mother gets scared and flies away. (I wonder what she thinks of us.)

Would you look at the twists of fate? A new life is being born among the things that could have killed me. Those things have become a home where the pigeons can say hello to life.

My plan now is to pop out from time to time and explain the Cyprus problem to these little ones.

Their mother will be a little annoyed with me for disturbing her, but never mind. After all, I’m the homeowner, so surely I’m entitled to a few things…

Who knows where these little ones will go once they fly away, one of these days…

Just imagine: they’ll raise this issue wherever they go and defend our side. That way, we’ll reach a solution sooner.

Isn’t that a brilliant plan?

I can almost hear those of you saying, “Oh, come on!”

Yes, I know we can’t reach a solution this way, either.

But don’t you think a solution is still a long way off?

When we look for it outside—that is, as long as we rely on countries such as the EU and the US, just as I’m counting on the pigeons—we’re this far from a solution.

We can resolve this issue together with the Motherland, but only through rational means…

By rational means, what I’m trying to say is that we need to develop policies that will compel the world to resolve this problem.

Hoping to see you on Wednesday… Be respectful in traffic!
