When I think about what we’ve been through during the congress process, I feel like saying, “Wow…”
The statements made, the things said, the things kept secret, the calculations, the appointments, the hirings, the dismissals… So much, so much…
We went through a period when anger, scowls, fake smiles and empty promises were rampant. I don’t know how the history of the TRNC will record this congress, but I’m certain my memories of it won’t be made up of very pleasant words.
The congress process ends tomorrow.
But it seems to me that the real question will be asked tomorrow…
I don’t know who will win or lose tomorrow, but it’s as clear as day that whoever wins, what happened during this process will carry over into the period after the congress…
I don’t think there will be any defections from the UBP. But that doesn’t mean this government will continue to function properly. I don’t think Parliament will work effectively, either. (Though saying it worked before would require having the memory of a goldfish.) Anyway, it’s quite clear there won’t be any harmonious cooperation within the UBP… I have serious doubts that this Parliament can pass the 2013 budget…
Therefore, in my view, whoever is elected UBP leader tomorrow will be the person who takes the country to an early election.
I can almost hear those of you asking, ‘Will an election solve anything?’ I ask myself the same question… But how much can a non-functioning parliament and a party whose MPs are at odds with one another address this country’s problems? Can laws that barely make it through Parliament really get approval from the Presidency on the first try? After what we’ve been through, no one should expect us to believe that party affairs and personal relationships are separate from governing the country…
In any case, I’d like to wish the UBP leader elected tomorrow every success in the election process…
And I’d remind the opposition of the proverb: the early bird gets ahead…
Until we meet again, I hope…
