HEAR YE,
HEAR YE!
(Publication Date: January 29, 2007)
-Hmm, look at those people
nationalist types, what can you expect...
-Leave them be, brother,
they're collaborators.
-They're all like that,
opposed to a solution.
*
The ‘guy’ who is supposedly the foreign minister of South Cyprus also said of our President that he “represents no state”...
I could have reported this
news in other ways, too.
You may have perceived
the approach above as nationalist or unserious; that is possible.
But it has nothing to do
with either.
Why?
First:
As the person who said
these words put it exactly, he too has a title that, for us, can only be associated with the term ‘so-called’.
Second:
The ‘guy’ who is supposedly
the foreign minister contradicts himself with what he says beyond these remarks. He first says that he does not care about our President’s words, and then criticizes them. In other words, the real lack of seriousness lies not in my approach but in his own words.
Despite all this, if you
still want to accuse me of nationalism—which, for me, is not an accusation but rather a source of pride—here is a nationalist approach based on the facts: “These so-called ministers, who know no bounds in their insolence and live on the Greek Cypriot side, keep making statements they cannot back up.
We follow these statements
with a faint smile.
Yes, we follow them with a
smile, because after a certain point, insolence becomes ridiculous.
Despite everything, these
insolent ‘fellows’ continue to deceive the world in one way or another with the policies they have pursued for years, policies that are incompatible with the facts.
Well, for these fellows,
who know no bounds in their insolence, disgrace and/or indecency no longer seem to matter much.”
Did that sound too
nationalist?
All right, let’s interpret
this statement from a non-nationalist standpoint: “Brother, Mr. Lillikas may have said it this way, but in the rest of his remarks he talks about a solution.
That’s a very important
signal for us.
Look, he said Mr. Talat in
his statement—isn’t that an indication that we’ve made progress?
Besides, not everyone on
the Greek Cypriot side thinks this way...”
If you’re wondering why I
approached this subject with examples like these, let me explain...
*
Hear ye, good people!
Don't say you didn't hear!...
-Hmm, look at those people
nationalist types, what can you expect...
-Leave them be, brother,
they're collaborators.
-They're all like that,
opposed to a solution.
Wherever this kind of talk
is heard, heads should roll immediately...
To be frank, if I were the
Sultan, I’d send two drummers to the front of the palace to make this announcement.
I’m thoroughly fed up with
these dialogues now.
You have no idea!
What is it, then...
The man has been seriously
insolent as the Foreign Minister of the Greek Cypriot side in South Cyprus—and it’s not just him: this behavior has become customary among politicians on the Greek Cypriot side.
It’s as clear as 2+2=4.
Also, if the person making
this statement does not recognize my state, my leaders or my President, then, for me, he will remain a ‘guy’ from an entity that exists on the Greek Cypriot side (for some reason, we call this the Greek Cypriot Administration of Southern Cyprus. We’ve never heard these people make an accusation against us that fits this wording...)
There is no point in
stating his title and so on.
But whenever anyone says
these things, they’re called an enemy of a solution, and so on.
The reason for this is
plain to see; besides, I’ve written about it many times before, so let me write it again.
Our esteemed
politicians:
Stop using the equation
“being a nationalist = opposing a solution” to win more votes for your parties.
Far from simply dividing
society with what you’re doing, you are causing the younger generation to grow up as people who do not love their country and lack national feeling.
I too hate extremism.
That’s not what I’m talking
about!
For me,
nationalism means national unity and solidarity, loving your country, loving your community, loving your flag and loving your land.
You political parties:
Don’t try to fish for
votes for or against something by using the concept of nationalism.
Because how far can you
take a society that lacks national feeling?
See you Wednesday... Be
courteous in traffic!
