ÇEKİRGE
(Publication Date: January 19, 2007)
Is Lieutenant Colonel Orhan still
alive?
What happened to Metin Karayel?
Will ‘Çekirge 2’ be published
soon?
Lieutenant Colonel Orhan, who would find it very difficult to fight alone against ASALA, which took the lives of so many Turkish diplomats—was he able to assemble the team he dreamed of?
Did what Lieutenant Colonel Orhan feared come to pass when he muttered to himself, “These men won’t let me enjoy a comfortable retirement”?
***
The questions above are addressed to my respected elder, Arslan Mengüç, who has authored many successful works.
One of the seasoned columnists at Vatan Newspaper, Mr. Arslan has immortalized, in his novel titled ‘Çekirge’, an operation that had been left in the dark, forgotten and/or made to be forgotten.
The novel features many familiar names, from Hiram Abas—whom we know from Soner Yalçın’s book titled “Bay Pipo” and who once served as Deputy Undersecretary of MİT—to then-President Kenan Evren.

In the novel, all the facts of the Armenian issue are laid bare through a brilliantly crafted story!
What was the tragedy of the Turkish diplomats subjected to ASALA’s treacherous attacks, and what was going through the minds of the others?
Where were ASALA militants engaged in terrorist activities trained?
How did ASALA fund its terrorist
activities?
Which countries supported ASALA?
Which countries did the foreign intelligence agencies that turned a blind eye to these activities work for?
Which states helped Turkey in its struggle against ASALA?
What was the purpose of the
colleges opened in certain places?
The answers to all these questions, and many more, are laid bare in Çekirge...
Mr. Mengüç has also skillfully written in this novel about why certain states, which we sometimes think have nothing to do with the issue, put the Armenian issue before the Turkish people.
In short, as our respected teacher
Mr. Arslan Mengüç himself says, ‘Çekirge’ is “a detective novel based largely on documents, written with the aim of explaining, at least to some extent, the Turkish-Armenian-ASALA relations to younger generations.”

I don’t intend to write here about the main theme emphasized in ‘Çekirge’; to understand it, you should read this book, ‘An ASALA Novel’!
Every book means something different
to me.
Among them, books that have been inscribed to me have always held a special meaning to me...
My respected teacher, Arslan Mengüç,
inscribed this book: “To my young colleague Cem KAR, with affection”...
With this inscription, ‘Çekirge’ took on a very different meaning for me; I should say that, with its rich content, it has now become my bedside book.

Arslan Mengüç lives here,

See you Monday... Be courteous
in traffic!
Note: Today I had
quite different topics on my agenda, both political and social; but I thought it was more important to tell you about the book titled ‘Çekirge’ that I had just finished, so I devoted today’s column to my respected teacher Arslan Mengüç’s book, ‘Çekirge’. Well done, teacher...
