ONE DAY

BEFORE, ONE DAY AFTER!

(Publication

Date: 11 April 2007)

One day before, one day after…

Life really is full of surprises!

You never know exactly what may happen to you or when.

Perhaps the secret of life lies in that:

I mean, if you knew what was going to happen, what pleasure would there be in living?

***

I am writing this article, grateful to my fingers, which respond to the commands coming from my brain.

Although the fact that my palms are not fully functional prevents me from using the mouse, I am trying to manage with my fingers.

Until yesterday, though, I could only not use my feet.

You understand better how important it is to be able to walk when you cannot walk!

Fortunately, although it is painful, I can now walk.

Another difficulty is having to take breaks while writing because of the constant itching caused by my illness.

Still, after a brief period of being “out of service,” at least right now I have fingers with which to write and “healthy” feet to get me to where the computer is; thank goodness.

*

I apologize to the readers who follow my articles for Monday.

Because of my illness, I had to take a one-day break from writing; in fact, as I mentioned a little earlier, I cannot be said to be very well even now.

However, compared with how I was before, I am better now; at least psychologically.

People have very different experiences in life, and the illness I experienced must be one of them.

I believe it would be helpful to share this experience with you.

I attended middle school at the school run by the factory where my father worked.

In those years, we also lived in the housing provided by the same factory.

There was a factory shuttle for those living in the housing; we would board it at the stop very close to our home and get off at school; it was the same on the way back.

On one of those journeys, a notice I saw through the bus’s foggy window always caught my attention.

The poster hanging on the noticeboard gave the name of a play that was to be staged very soon...

The poster on that noticeboard said, “One misfortune is better than a thousand pieces of advice.”

This is a proverb that has left its mark on every period of my life; I am sure it holds true for many people, too.

I think I read it in a book; I can’t quite remember where I read it now, but I remember the sentence.

The sentence in question is one of those that have guided my life.

And that sentence is: “The source of every biological illness is psychological!”

That is why I have always been careful about the rough roads of life.

I don’t let changing life circumstances bother me much, I don’t get myself into trouble, I stay away from stress; I always keep my spirits high.

As I said, life is full of surprises!

It turns out that the life circumstances that would bother me, get me into trouble, and leave me demoralized in the arms of stress were going to come my way.

Perhaps you are saying, “Oooo Cem, what else is going to happen to you?”

That’s right.

Who knows what else will happen to us?

But the misfortune I mentioned a little earlier happened to me.

Those stressful life circumstances that put me in a difficult position created this “one day before, one day after” situation for me.

In place of Cem, who was perfectly healthy the day before, joking with those around him and carrying on with his normal life, the next day there was someone who was unwell, unable to use his hands properly, struggling to walk, and developing redness and swelling in various parts of his body.

I am in the grip of an illness brought on by stress.

My illness has been diagnosed.

Right now, I am moving forward with firm steps on the road to recovery.

But these last four days have been very difficult for me...

I would like to thank my dear wife once again here.

And to you, although I believe that “One misfortune is more important than a thousand pieces of advice,” I would like to say this: “The source of every biological illness is psychological.”

So keep your spirits up and don’t worry

so much about everything.

Even if I couldn’t manage it, you should!
